Cultivar

Cultivating You. A habit tracker where the day is a plant you feed and the year is a garden you can look back over.

Privacy policy

The first part applies to Cultivar everywhere. The iPhone and Android sections below it cover what differs between the two.

On every platform

Cultivar has no account, no analytics and no ads. Your habits, completions and how each one felt are stored in a database on your phone. You can save a copy of it as a file from Patterns → gear → Save a copy, and restore from that file; the file goes wherever you put it and nowhere else.

Cairn, the weekly reflection, is optional. When Cairn is resting, nothing leaves your phone. When Cairn looks, it sends a short summary of your habits to write the reflection. The summary includes each habit's name and the note you wrote on it, its schedule, rate and streak, how long you have kept it, its longest run of missed days with their dates, amounts against your targets, roughly what time of day you keep it, which habits you keep on the same days, and how each one felt where you said. For the week and month views it also includes the names and dates of one-off tasks you completed, and for the year view a rate for each season. It never includes your day-by-day record.

Cairn looks automatically at most once a week for each of its four views (Week, Month, Seasons and Life), and again whenever you tap him to look. Where the summary goes depends on the platform, below.

Reminders are local notifications scheduled on the phone. The app does not use location, contacts, photos, the microphone, the camera or advertising identifiers, and does not track you across apps or websites.

If this policy changes, the change appears on this page.

iPhone

Your data is included in your iPhone's own backup like any other app data.

Cairn looks for people who support Cultivar with a monthly subscription. While you are subscribed, and only then, the summary goes from your phone to Cultivar's own service, which passes it to Anthropic to write the reflection and keeps nothing but a count of calls per subscription. The summary is not stored on the service and is not linked to your name, your Apple ID or your device. Anthropic handles it under its own terms. Without a subscription, Cairn rests and nothing leaves your phone.

Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.

Android

If Android backup is turned on, your habit database is included in your phone's backup to your Google account. Nothing else from Cultivar is, and your API key (below) is always left out.

Cairn can look in one of two ways:

Without a key or a subscription, Cairn rests and nothing leaves your phone.

Subscriptions are handled by Google Play. We never see your payment details.

Where the app's rules come from

Every rule in Cultivar is based on published research on how habits form. The findings, their sources and how strong each one is are on the evidence page.
